NYC Eats: Abiko Curry

Abiko Curry was our saving grace a couple weeks ago when my cousin, Mocha Diva, was in town for DragCon NYC. It was a Friday night at 8pm.  No place is going to have a reservation for 3 available without a ridiculous wait. Also, my cousin was still in drag and had two huge carry-on bags. A small, crowded place was out of the question.

Luckily when we entered Abiko Curry, we were greeted by the server who was a fellow Filipina. We look out for each other and I love that natural tendency Filipinos have.

The wooden tables have the cutest design of the restaurant’s logo and the sides of each table have pull-out drawers with utensils and napkins.

I’ve never tried Japanese curry before. The menu has different entree choices: curry rice, curry noodles, and curry pasta. There are also non-curry dishes available. I ordered the curry rice with a pork cutlet topped with cheese.  It came with the free toppings: roasted garlic and scallions. You have a choice of 5 spice levels for your dish: mild and then Levels 1-4. I chose Level 2 thinking I was playing it safe. Level 2 was too hot for me after a few bites! You have been warned! I’m someone who can handle a bit of spice, too!

I would definitely try this place again, but order Spice Level 1 and skip the cheese. For me it wasn’t worth the extra $2. Mozzarella has a tendency to clump up, so eating a glob of cheese without feeling like I was about to choke was next to impossible. Other than that, the food was delicious!

Clearly, I was on the struggle bus.
